Vallotton was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1865. He studied art in Paris, where he came into contact with the Symbolist movement. In the 1890s, he began to develop his own unique style, which was characterized by flat, geometric forms, muted colors, and a strong sense of design. Vallotton's work was often controversial, but it was also highly praised by critics and collectors. He died in Paris in 1925.
