The Cradle of Native American Civilization

Long before the arrival of European explorers, the Finger Lakes region was home to thriving Native American communities. The Seneca and Iroquois peoples established permanent settlements along the shores of these inland seas, where they hunted, fished, and farmed the fertile land.

Among the most fascinating archaeological sites in the region is the Ganondagan State Historic Site, a living history museum that recreates a 17th-century Seneca village. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the culture and traditions of the Seneca people, learning about their daily lives, their longhouses, and their spiritual beliefs.

Another significant historical site is the Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park, located near Canandaigua Lake. This opulent estate was built in the late 19th century by Frederick Ferris Thompson, a wealthy industrialist and philanthropist. The mansion is now a museum that showcases the opulent lifestyle of the Gilded Age, while the gardens are a horticultural masterpiece.

As you explore the Finger Lakes region, keep an eye out for the many historical markers that dot the landscape. These markers tell the stories of Native American villages, colonial forts, and early settlements that are often overlooked but played a vital role in shaping the region's history.

From Colonial Clashes to Revolutionary Battles

In the 17th century, the Finger Lakes region became a battleground in the ongoing conflict between the British and the French. Both sides sought to control the region's strategic waterways and fur trade. In 1687, the Marquis de Denonville led a devastating expedition against the Seneca villages in the Finger Lakes, burning them to the ground and displacing the inhabitants.

During the American Revolution, the Finger Lakes region was again a hotbed of activity. The Sullivan Expedition of 1779 sought to destroy the Iroquois Confederacy and its support for the British. General John Sullivan led a force of over 4,000 soldiers into the Finger Lakes, burning villages and laying waste to crops. The expedition ultimately succeeded in breaking the power of the Iroquois Confederacy and securing the region for the newly formed United States.

Prohibition and the Rise of Tourism

In the early 20th century, the Finger Lakes region became a major center for the production and distribution of illegal alcohol during Prohibition. Rumrunners took advantage of the region's many waterways and dense forests to smuggle their illicit cargo across the bFree Download from Canada.
