Origins and Development
The CC&O was founded in 1893 by a group of investors led by John B. Dennis. The railroad's original line ran from Elkhorn City, Kentucky, to Erwin, Tennessee. In the years that followed, the CC&O expanded its network through a series of acquisitions and mergers. By 1924, the railroad operated over 1,000 miles of track, connecting the coal fields of Kentucky and Virginia with the ports of Charleston, South Carolina, and Norfolk, Virginia.
Operations and Equipment
The CC&O was primarily a coal-hauling railroad. However, it also transported a variety of other commodities, including timber, pulpwood, and manufactured goods. The railroad's fleet of locomotives included both steam and diesel engines. In the 1950s, the CC&O began to dieselize its operations, and by the early 1960s, steam locomotives had been phased out.
